Chaz Bono & Neil Patrick Harris to Be Honored at L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s 40th Anniversary Gala

Writer, actor, musician and transgender activist Chaz Bono (Dancing with the Stars) will be honored at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s 40th Anniversary Gala & Auction, hosted by Leslie Jordan (The Help) and featuring Jane Lynch (Glee) on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. As was previously announced, Neil Patrick Harris and partner David Burtka will also be honored.

Bono, who will be honored with the Center’s Board of Directors award, has been a trailblazer in transgender activism, publicly sharing his experience transitioning to male in the documentary Becoming Chaz. Since 1995, he has been a dedicated activist in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, having served as a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign and Entertainment Media Director for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

“Chaz has been a trailblazer in our community for many years, bravely speaking his truth and working to make our movement stronger. He has continued that leadership since coming out as a transgender man. No other person has done more than Chaz to promote visibility and understanding about the reality of transgender people,” says Center CEO Lorri L. Jean. “His courageous example is helping transgender youth and their families throughout the world. That’s great progress not only for the LGBT community, but for society as a whole.”

Emmy-winning stage and screen star Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and his partner, actor and chef David Burtka, will be honored at the gala with the Rand Schrader Distinguished Achievement Award, presented by Center board member Jane Lynch. Lynch was the recipient of the award last year.

One of the premier events for the LGBT community of Los Angeles, the gala begins with a chic cocktail reception and large silent auction featuring travel and dining packages and much more, followed by dinner and fabulous entertainment.

The gala will take place on Saturday, Nov. 12. The cocktail reception is at 6 p.m. with entertainment to follow at 8 p.m. Tickets for the gala are $300 for general admission or $400 for a VIP ticket. For more information, or to purchase your tickets, go to www.anniversarygala.org.

Benefit Show for Japan Features Live Music, DJs & Vintage Wheels Show @ Alex’s Bar

Event promoter, deejay and Salon Pop co-owner Frankie Alvaro didn’t want to just donate money to help relief efforts in Japan in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami, so he decided to take manners into his own hands and organize a benefit with a few of his friends, musical colleagues and vintage wheels enthusiasts. The event is slated for Sunday, April 10th from 3pm-2am and features a vintage scooter, motorcycle, van, and car show in the front parking lot of Alex’s Bar [2913 E. Anaheim St., Long Beach, CA 90804; 562-434-8292]. Bands slated to take the stage include Dante Vs. Zombies, The Black Apples, TRMRS, Grand Elegance, Gabriel Hart and the Fourth Wall, Red Roses, Dano’s Juke Joint Freak Show, Death Hymn Number 9, New Fidelity, The Crystelles, and Gestapo Khazi. Plus, DJs including DJ Frankie the Face, Geaux Geaux, Reuben Kaiban, Will’mer, Johnny Sleeper, Glory Boy Kev, and Marv Mack. The event will be emceed by Don Pie.

“This is the biggest event I’ve ever booked,” Alvaro confessed, “and I’ve been booking shows and deejaying for 8 years! The idea came to me from pretty much straight desperation. I wanted to help these people, but I didn’t want to just donate $10 dollars by texting a random number, and then not even being certain when, or how much of that money would actually reach these poor people. So, that’s when I had the idea for the show and it came together pretty much overnight. Everyone wanting to participate, knowing the bigger picture, and for being a really big event it came together flawlessly. There will even be a raffle in the middle of the event, with donations from many of the shops on 4th Street as well as local tattoo shops, guitar shops, clothing and skateboard companies. 100% of the proceeds will be taken back to Japan by Immoni on 4th owners Eiko and her son Yuske, and I asked them to give the money to a charity that will put the money to use immediately…. or even to give the all of the money if they see a family walking down the street that had lost everything. We all need to do our part for Japan, and this is a great way for people to donate money, while having a great time!”

CARE to Dine is a one day event being held on Thursday August 12, 2010. During this day numerous participating restaurants and cafes in the Greater Long Beach area will donate 20% of their breakfast, lunch, and dinner proceeds to the C.A.R.E. Program. When dinning out on that evening, please do not forget to mention to your restaurant hosts that you are dinning out for “CARE to Dine”.

Proceeds from the event will benefit St. Mary Medical Center’s C.A.R.E Program which provides an array of programs and services for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, from Medical and Dental Services to Case Management. The C.A.R.E program makes high quality health and social services available to HIV/AIDS infected and affected individuals and families in a manner that is professional, compassionate, and recognizes the dignity and autonomy of each individual.
