Ellen said that Constance was “part of a new generation of leaders for her stand for gay rights”. Ellen had offered to throw a prom for Constance and the other kids at school who wanted to attend, however she declined saying what she wanted to was to have a prom at her school which was sponsored by the school district. The local chapter of the ACLU in Mississippi who is currently investigating the schools actions.   Ellen told Constance, “I admire you so much. When I was your age I never would have had the strength to do what you are doing.”

In a recent story, USA reported that the Itawamba County school board canceled the planned April 2 prom after McMillen challenged the district’s policy banning same-sex dates. McMillen also had asked to wear a tuxedo to the prom, but was told by the district that girls must wear gowns.

McMillen, aided by the American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi, filed a federal lawsuit against district officials for alleged violations of her First Amendment right to freedom of expression and asked that the prom be reinstated. A hearing on that request is slated for Monday in Aberdeen .

In their one public statement, school board members said they canceled the prom because it was causing a distraction to the educational mission of the high school. They also cited safety concerns as a factor in their decision, while expressing their desire that a private group host the prom.

Maybe it’s because of the lack of great shows on my Tivo this summer, but I decided a couple of weeks ago to check out America’s Got Talent.  I’d managed to avoid this show until this year and unfortunately now I think I’m hooked on yet another reality show.    This week the judges and America were both in awe of this 8 year old girl with an amazing voice.   Check out her performance below:

The Beastie Boys who have gained negative attention for some of their homo phobic lyrics in their first album, “Licenced to Ill”.  In the late 90′s  the group issued a formal appology in EW magazine, ”I would like to… formally apologize to the entire gay and lesbian community for the s—ty and ignorant things we said on our first record,” Horovitz wrote. ”There are no excuses. But time has healed our stupidity…. We have learned and sincerely changed since the ’80s…. We hope that you’ll accept this long overdue apology.”

Choi is a 2003 West Point graduate and California native who served in Iraq in 2006 and 2007 with the 10th Mountain Division.  In a discussion about the upcoming hearing, he told CNN’s “American Morning” on Monday that he is acting on “the lessons that I learned at West Point — honesty and courage and integrity”.

Today I stumbled upon this YouTube video of a flash mob hitting up a clothing store in Hollywood.  Looks like it’s one big promo for MC Hammer’s new show on A&E, Hammertime, so it’s likely just a clever publicity stunt.  Either way, fifty plus random (young to very old) people in hammer pants doing the hammer dance is still hilarious and worth a couple minutes of your time.  Enjoy!
